Fragrance has incredible power over us. It can trigger memories and take us straight back to a time and place, long forgotten. It can make us feel elated, attracted, attractive, sad or repulsed. It is a, not-so-silent, back drop to our daily life.
A reader’s sense of smell can be evoked through writing, to take them right into the moment, and yet it is almost impossible to recollect a fragrance through memory.
As with many things, we take the olfactory system for granted, unless it is impaired, temporarily through a head cold for example, or worse, permanently through an injury. Then we notice that we have also lost our ability to taste, and that is a tragedy.
