I am based in beautiful Buckinghamshire, South-East England, and I enjoy my work in the National Health Service.
I have always enjoyed writing and taking photographs, as hobbies. I was inspired to start this blog in June 2017 after completing the online ‘Start Writing Fiction Course’ through Future Learn to get feedback on my creative writing but I have increasingly enjoyed rising to the challenges of the daily Word Prompt and the Weekly Photo Challenge.
I imagined writing the story of ‘Mango Crumble‘ for many years and last year I completed writing it as a feature-length film script. It is a coming of age story about a Punjabi-Indian girl who immigrates to Britain in the early 1970’s. Last year, I was given the amazing opportunity to work with a final year Script Developer from one of the best film schools in the world. We have just completed a six month re-working of the script. It has been an incredible experience and I am really excited about the completed script. The feedback is that it is an inspirational story for women of all races and a story that has not been told before.
I was inspired to get on and write my script, by Leslee Udwin. She was the executive producer of East is East, one of my all time favourite films. I was fortunate to see her briefly at a charity showing of her film, West is West, and I remember thinking, wouldn’t it have been good if I could have told her about my completed script. But that was many years ago and I hadn’t even learnt how to format a script. Listening to her speak of her experiences of filming West is West, on location in India did, however, move me to embark on my project. I am proud of my achievement, even if it is now sitting as a set of dusty drafts, clipped together by a skirt hanger.
I look forward to sharing my experiences with you through writing and my photographs. As a new writer and photographer, I welcome feedback, comments and suggestions.
Update on my script:
I am really excited to report that my script has got as far as the long list on the BBC Writers Room this year, and they tell me that it got into the top 4%, of the almost 4000 entries. This means it achieved a full read through and I will in due course receive a full script report. They also say that I will be kept on their list of ‘ promising writers’ for other suitable development opportunities that may arise! Watch this space!
